Meet Nicki McClung Environmental Impact manager for Aritzia working remotely from Fernie B.C

Nicki joined 2nd Edition when we first opened our doors in January as a Private Office Member. She had just recently relocated to Fernie from Seattle with her family and needed a quiet space to work. Nicki works remotely for Aritzia as their Environmental Impact Manager. She has been in this role for a little over six months and manages their climate, waste, operations and product circularity programs.

Q: What do you love most about your work?

A: I get to work on so many amazing projects and I feel like I get to make a positive impact on our planet. I have a great team that challenges me every day and who is supportive of me living and working remotely in this awesome town!

Q: What’s one thing – either industry-related or not – you learned in the last month?

A: I had to analyze the cost/benefits of virgin vs. recycled down vs. synthetic down fills a couple weeks ago and now I feel like I’m a goose down expert. HMU with all your waterfowl feather questions!

Q: How do you define success?

A: When I can look back at a project or a time in my life and feel proud of what I’ve done or accomplished, I would say that is success. Also if I can learn from my mistakes and failures, I think that is an important measure of success.

Q: Who inspires you?

A: Right now, anyone who is a front-line worker, but especially a friend who is an ICU nurse in Seattle. Last year she was on the picket lines in January 2020 demanding better pay and working conditions for nurses, and while little changed, she still has been working without a break for over a year. She has also vaccinated HUNDREDS of people, including Pete Carroll (head coach of the Seattle Seahawks). If she can put her life on the line for nearly 14 months, I can do my part and wear my mask. 😉

Q: When not working how do you spend your time?

A: I have two small kids so I spend a lot of time with them splashing in puddles, going for hikes, or hanging at the playground. I also love skiing and am bummed the season is coming to an end, but also looking forward to getting the mountain bike out of storage and checking out the famous trails in the area. I also love my tropical houseplants, and have a ton of little props getting ready to go if there are any houseplant enthusiasts out there!

Q: What’s one thing you love about Fernie?

A: I love the vibe here – folks are so friendly and welcoming and there are just unlimited ways to recreate here, without it ever feeling too crowded. I came from a big city and I definitely am enjoying being in a small town again.

Q: What’s the last book you read?

A: Becoming – Michelle Obama. I aspire to be the person, parent, and partner she is!
